KAMPALA, Uganda — Daily Thinkers has opened discussions with the European Union (EU) Delegation to Uganda on potential strategic cooperation aimed at strengthening responsible digital journalism, youth participation, media literacy and constructive public dialogue. The engagement took place at the EU Office in Kampala, where the Daily Thinkers team presented its vision and explored possible areas of convergence between the platform’s emerging Youth Media and Democratic Participation Initiative and the EU’s broader priorities in Uganda and Africa.
Representing the EU Delegation during the engagement was Toke Hauch Arnoldi, Political Advisor, who welcomed the initiative and encouraged the Daily Thinkers team to continue engaging with the relevant EU structures and implementing partners. Arnoldi explained that opportunities for cooperation with the EU are generally pursued within established programming and implementation frameworks. He noted that the EU operates through multiannual planning and budget cycles, meaning that new initiatives cannot simply be incorporated outside the established programming process.
He therefore encouraged Daily Thinkers to continue refining its concept, engage the relevant structures and monitor the calls for proposals and other opportunities through which organisations can seek to participate in EU-supported programmes. The message offered an important pathway for the young digital platform: rather than expecting an immediate funding arrangement, Daily Thinkers can position its initiative within existing and future EU programming priorities and pursue opportunities through the appropriate implementation mechanisms.
The proposed Daily Thinkers initiative focuses on areas that intersect with several EU priorities in Africa, including youth empowerment, education and skills, digital transformation, democratic participation, governance, climate communication and people-to-people engagement. The EU’s partnership with Sub-Saharan Africa places emphasis on human development, inclusive and sustainable growth, digital transformation, science, technology and innovation, democratic governance, inclusive participation, education and skills, as well as climate and environmental action. Youth and gender inclusion are also identified as important cross-cutting considerations.
The EU’s Africa-Europe Youth Academy, which includes Uganda and runs from 2025 to 2029, similarly places emphasis on youth leadership, human development, peace and governance, providing an important context for initiatives seeking to strengthen young people’s capacity to participate constructively in public life. For Daily Thinkers, these areas provide a potential foundation for a partnership that goes beyond conventional media support. The platform is seeking to develop a model in which young people are not merely consumers of information but become informed participants in public conversations, equipped with the skills to verify information, understand policy issues, use digital platforms responsibly and contribute to constructive national and international discourse.
The proposed initiative builds directly on the philosophy behind Daily Thinkers’ identity: “Thinking Beyond the Headlines.” “Thinking Beyond the Headlines” is not simply about reporting what happened; it is about helping society understand why it matters and what can be done about it.
Founded by Wabusimba Amiri, Daily Thinkers was established as a digital news and public-information platform with an editorial ambition to move beyond headline-driven reporting towards journalism that provides context, encourages reflection and connects information with its wider social implications.
Its areas of interest include diplomacy, governance, economics, investment, entrepreneurship, technology, education, tourism, culture, sports, climate action and sustainable development, with particular attention to Africa’s place in an increasingly interconnected international system. The platform’s editorial approach is founded on principles including accuracy over speculation, context over sensationalism, dialogue over division, solutions over pessimism and evidence over unsupported opinion.
It is this approach that Daily Thinkers hopes to translate into a structured youth-focused initiative. Under the proposed model, young participants could receive practical exposure to digital literacy, information verification, fact-checking, journalism ethics, multimedia storytelling, civic participation, public policy communication, climate communication, artificial intelligence and responsible use of digital technologies. The initiative would also create opportunities for young people to produce stories, podcasts, videos and other forms of digital content examining issues affecting their communities and Uganda’s engagement with the wider world.
The proposed partnership also carries a broader public-diplomacy dimension, As Uganda and the European Union mark 50 years of diplomatic partnership in 2026, opportunities to strengthen people-to-people understanding and create new platforms for dialogue between young Ugandans and European institutions assume particular relevance. The EU Delegation has highlighted the depth and evolution of the partnership during the anniversary year.
Daily Thinkers believes digital media can play an important role in translating diplomatic and development cooperation into stories and conversations that ordinary citizens can understand and engage with. Rather than treating international relations as a subject confined to diplomatic institutions, the platform seeks to examine how international partnerships affect communities, businesses, students, entrepreneurs, innovators and young people.
This includes explaining what international agreements mean in practice, how development programmes connect with local priorities, what opportunities are available to young people and how citizens can participate constructively in public policy conversations. Such an approach is particularly relevant in an era in which social media has dramatically increased the speed at which information circulates, while also increasing the risks associated with misinformation, disinformation, manipulation and information taken out of context.
The discussions with the EU also recognised the changing nature of journalism and public communication. Young people increasingly encounter public affairs through social media platforms, short videos, podcasts, influencers and other digital channels. The challenge is therefore no longer simply access to information, but the ability to determine what is credible, understand context and make responsible decisions about what to share.
Daily Thinkers’ proposed “Verify before You Amplify” concept seeks to address this challenge by encouraging young digital users to pause, verify information and consider its wider implications before reproducing it. The proposed Youth Media Lab would provide a practical space through which young people could develop these skills while producing credible, constructive and solutions-oriented content. The initiative could ultimately evolve into a wider network of youth correspondents, fellows, media practitioners, researchers and public-policy communicators capable of contributing to informed public debate.
For Daily Thinkers, the engagement with the EU is being approached as the beginning of a strategic conversation rather than an immediate funding request. The advice from the EU Delegation was clear: initiatives seeking EU support need to fit within the relevant programming priorities and access opportunities through established calls, implementing structures and other appropriate mechanisms. This means that Daily Thinkers will continue refining its concept and exploring how the initiative can complement rather than duplicate existing programmes.
The approach is also consistent with the EU’s wider programming architecture, which operates through country, regional and continental frameworks and translates strategic priorities into specific programmes and actions. Current EU external action programming covers the 2021–2027 period, with additional multiannual action planning used to identify concrete areas of intervention. For Daily Thinkers, this provides a practical roadmap: build the initiative, demonstrate its value, develop credible partnerships, align it with established priorities and participate in relevant calls when they become available.
Appreciating the EU team for receiving the Daily Thinkers delegation and allowing the team to present its vision, Wabusimba Amiri said the engagement represented an important opportunity to discuss how journalism can contribute more meaningfully to society. He explained that Daily Thinkers was created with the ambition of changing how society’s issues are reported and how journalism contributes to the way those issues are understood and experienced, He Noted.
For Amiri, “Thinking Beyond the Headlines” is not simply a slogan, It represents an editorial philosophy that asks not only what happened, but also why it happened, why it matters, who is affected, what the wider implications are and what constructive responses are possible. He thanked the EU team for the openness of the discussion and for providing an opportunity for Daily Thinkers to better understand the pathways through which future cooperation could be pursued.
The engagement now gives Daily Thinkers an opportunity to strengthen its proposed initiative before relevant future calls and programming opportunities arise. The platform intends to continue engaging with potential partners while developing a practical framework with measurable outcomes, including youth training, digital-content production, media-literacy campaigns, public-policy storytelling and opportunities for young people to participate in constructive civic dialogue. The broader ambition is to demonstrate that digital journalism can be more than a mechanism for distributing breaking news. It can become a platform for understanding, participation, innovation and responsible citizenship.
For the EU, such an approach potentially complements existing priorities around youth, digital transformation, education and skills, governance and people-to-people engagement. For Daily Thinkers, it represents an opportunity to demonstrate its founding principle in practice: that journalism should not merely tell audiences what happened, but help them understand what it means.
As Uganda’s relationship with Europe continues to evolve and Africa’s role in global affairs becomes increasingly important, creating spaces where young people can engage with these questions will become even more significant. Daily Thinkers’ engagement with the EU Delegation is therefore best understood not as the conclusion of a funding process, but as the opening of a strategic partnership conversation. And for a platform built around Thinking Beyond the Headlines, the next chapter may be about turning that conversation into measurable opportunities for young Ugandans to inform, question, verify, participate and shape the narratives that define their society and its place in the world.
